What is Canvas LMS?
Also known as: Canvas, Instructure Canvas
Canvas is the most-deployed LMS in North American higher education in 2026, with the cleanest UI of the major platforms (Blackboard, Moodle, Brightspace, Schoology). The mobile experience via the Canvas Student app is materially more polished than competitors.
Canvas hosts two distinct quiz engines: "Classic Quizzes" (the original tool, used by most legacy courses) and "New Quizzes" (the LTI 1.3 replacement, gradually rolled out by Instructure). New Quizzes adds question types Classic doesn't have — categorization, hot spot, stimulus questions — at the cost of a different DOM that some browser tools don't handle correctly.
