What is LTI 1.3 (Learning Tools Interoperability)?
Also known as: LTI, Learning Tools Interoperability
LTI is maintained by 1EdTech (formerly IMS Global) and is supported by every major LMS — Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, Brightspace, Schoology — and every major publisher and edtech vendor. LTI 1.1 was the dominant version for over a decade; LTI 1.3 (Advantage) is the modern standard with stronger security.
Most third-party tools embedded in modern LMS courses are LTI launches. When you click a Knewton Alta link inside Canvas, or a Pearson MyLab assignment inside Blackboard, the LMS makes an LTI launch into the third-party tool, passes user identity, and embeds the tool inside an iframe.
