What is Moodle?

Also known as: Moodle LMS

Moodle was started in 2002 and is maintained by Moodle HQ in Australia. Unlike Canvas (Instructure-hosted) or Blackboard (vendor-hosted), Moodle is software you run yourself, which means deployments are heavily customized — themes, plugins, question types, and even quiz UIs vary.

Moodle's quiz engine supports more question types than any other LMS in 2026: standard multiple choice and short answer, plus calculated questions (numeric variables substituted at attempt-time), drag-and-drop into text, drag-and-drop onto image, and matching. Tools that support Moodle have to handle all of these — generic auto-fill tools fail on calculated and drag-and-drop.
