MathXL builds nearly every exercise from an algorithmic template: two students on the same assignment see the same question shape with different numbers, and clicking "Similar Exercise" regenerates your own values on the spot. That's why the classic routes to MathXL answers fail. Answer-key sites and shared documents record solutions to someone else's random draw, and database tools like Chegg return a matching question shape whose numbers don't match your screen.

Pearson's built-in aids are the honest baseline — Help Me Solve This walks the problem structure and View an Example shows a worked sibling — but both are slow, and the gradebook records every time you open one. The approach that scales is solving your actual instance: FastSolve reads a screenshot of the problem in front of you, has Claude or GPT-4o work it, and returns the answer with steps in about 2 seconds. Nothing is looked up — every answer is computed from the numbers on your screen.

MathXL vs MyMathLab: same Pearson engine, different packaging

MathXL is Pearson's standalone online homework, tutorial, and assessment system; MyMathLab — sold today as MyLab Math — bundles the same homework engine with a specific textbook's course content, videos, and study plan. Under the hood they are one family: the same problem player, the same equation-palette answer entry, and the same per-student algorithmic question generation. Syllabi and students use the names interchangeably, and advice that works on one transfers to the other.

What FastSolve supports on MathXL today — and the Pearson-hosted nuance

FastSolve ships native in-page adapters for Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, Brightspace, ALEKS, Schoology, Knewton, Learnosity, and DeltaMath — on those platforms it detects the question in the page and fills the answer directly. MathXL isn't on that list: there's no adapter that runs on mathxl.com, so this page describes the screenshot and paste workflow honestly rather than pretending otherwise. FastSolve returns the worked answer; you enter it in the equation palette yourself.

One nuance worth knowing: FastSolve's Pearson adapter does understand the classic MathXL problem player — the two-pane layout with the equation-rendered stem and lettered choices — but it only activates when the player is served from a Pearson-hosted address (pearson.com or pearsoncmg.com), which is how some Pearson courses deliver the same engine. On those pages, in-page reading of multiple-choice questions can already work. Assignments loaded from mathxl.com itself always use the screenshot flow. What proctors and MathXL can — and can't — see

  • FastSolve never touches the mathxl.com page — no injected overlay, no filled inputs, no simulated clicks. Screenshare shows only Pearson's player.

  • MathXL's gradebook keeps reporting what it always reports: attempts, scores, time on task, and which learning aids you opened. A screenshot workflow adds nothing to that record.

  • Tests configured to require Respondus LockDown Browser disable all Chrome extensions — FastSolve cannot run there (see FAQ).

FastSolve's Pearson adapter can already read the classic MathXL-style player when a course serves it from a Pearson-hosted address, and native mathxl.com support is on the roadmap.

Solve the instance on your screen rather than hunting for a key. MathXL problems are algorithmic — Pearson regenerates the numbers per student and per attempt, so shared answer documents rarely match your version. FastSolve reads a screenshot of your exact problem, works it with Claude or GPT-4o, and shows the answer with steps; you type it into MathXL like a normal response.

Not a usable one. MathXL builds each exercise from a template with randomized values — the same mechanism behind its "Similar Exercise" button — so a key recorded from someone else's session has the wrong numbers for yours. Chegg-style database lookups share the flaw: the question shape matches, the values don't. An AI solver that computes your actual instance is the practical alternative.

MathXL is Pearson's standalone online homework and tutorial system; MyMathLab (now MyLab Math) packages that same homework player with a textbook's full course content. MathXL tracks attempts, scores, time on task, and which built-in learning aids (Help Me Solve This, View an Example) you opened — it doesn't scan your extensions or record your screen. The exception is proctored tests that require Respondus LockDown Browser, which disables every Chrome extension; FastSolve cannot run inside it. On regular homework in normal Chrome, a screenshot workflow leaves an ordinary-looking attempt.

FastSolve reports a 98% accuracy figure on its homepage trust badge, with harder problems routed to Claude or GPT-4o. On MathXL the usual failure mode isn't the math — it's format: Pearson often requires an exact value, a simplified fraction, or specific rounding, and marks a correct-but-differently-formatted answer wrong. Check the worked answer's final form and match what the problem asks for before you enter it.
